Etymology

Refers to the district of Sherpur, a transliteration of শেরপুর, ultimately a bilingual compound of Classical Persian شیر (šēr, “lion”) + Bengali পুর (pura, “city”), named in honor of Sher Ali Gazi, the last zamindar of the region.
