From Ukrainian Шостак (Šostak) and Belarusian Шостак (Šóstak), from Ukrainian шостий (šostyj, “sixth”) and Belarusian шосты (šósty, “sixth”). Less commonly, a respelling of Polish Szostak, Szóstak, and Slovak Šosták. Ultimately, from a derivative of Proto-Slavic *šestъ (“sixth”).
