First attested as spangghe in 1320. Etymology unknown. Potentially derived from a term cognate to Old English spann (“strip of land”), from Middle Dutch spange (“elongated strip of land”) or from an ancient hydronym. The element gea (“village, village area”) is a later addition that developed under influence from neighbouring toponyms. Compare Spanbroek, Spang, Spangen and Spannum.
