Etymology

Attested in local Medieval documents as Suevos. From Latin suēvōs (Suebi), from Proto-Germanic *swēbaz, from Proto-Indo-European *swé (self): probably because these places were settled by the Suebi people who established in Galicia and Northern Portugal in the 5th century.
