Of uncertain origin. There are three main theories regarding its origin:
- from a diminutive form of Szabó
- from a Slavic word meaning "marten" or "sable", related to Russian соболь (sobolʹ, “sable”)
- from a Turkic language; compare Kazakh шабуылшы (şabuylşy, “attacker”)
