A hydronym, attested in the 15th century as Tamuja. A suffixed form from Paleo-Hispanic, probably from Proto-Celtic, from Proto-Indo-European *temH- (“dark”); or alternatively from Proto-Celtic *tā-,[1] *tāyo- (“to melt, flow”), from Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (“to melt”).[2] See also Thames.
