Borrowed from Ancient Greek θηρίδιον (thērídion, “beastling, critter”); diminutive of Ancient Greek θήρ (thḗr, “beast”). From the roots of Proto-Hellenic *kʷʰḗr and Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰwer- (“wild; feral”). Doublet of Theridium.
