Tupinambis

Etymology
Coined by French zoologist François Marie Daudin in 1802, from Latin Tupinambis, from Old Tupi tupinambá.[1] The taxon stems from a misinterpretation of Marcgrave's description in Historia Naturalis Brasiliae, where he writes TEivgvacv & Temapara Tupinambis (literally, “Teîugûasu and temapara for the Tupibambá”),[2] stating that the Tupinambá called the species by these names, but Daudin interpreted it as the name of the species itself.[3][4]
