First attested as hulenstroten in 1335. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch Ulo (a personal name) or ule (“owl”) and the plural form of straat (“street”). An alternative explanation interprets the toponym as a compound of ool (“land next to water, humid low-lying land”) and stroet (“wetland overgrown with brushwood”).
