Vatrop
Dutch
Etymology
Potentially attested as uaroht in 918-948, attested with certainty as fortrapa in 922. If the oldest attestation refers to the current settlement, a derivation from a term cognate to Old English faroð (“beach, coast”) or, alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *ferhô (“evergreen oak, (Quercus ilex)”) or *farnô (“fern”) suffixed with *-oþ. If the oldest attestation does not refer to the current settlement, a derivation from Old Dutch *apa (“river, watercourse”) is possible.
