Uncertain. Possibly from Middle Low German vent (“boy, lad, servant”), from Old Saxon fendio (“foot-soldier”). If so, then cognate with Middle High German vent (“boy, lad, foot-soldier, pawn”), West Frisian feint (“servant, boyfriend”), Dutch vent (“guy, bloke, fellow”).
