Etymology
First attested as de wischele in 1273. Etymology uncertain. Possibilities include a compound derived from either Proto-Germanic *wisô- (“pasture”) or Old Dutch Widso (a personal name) and lo (“light forest”) and a derivation from Middle Dutch wissel (“changing, variable”) (used here to indicate land that changes hands each year).
