Etymology

  • (Land van Cuijk) First attested as Zand kand [sic] in 1803-1820. Compound of zand (“sand”) and kant (“side, edge”). The element zand was added to distinguish the settlement from Broekkant and Peelkant.
  • (Tilburg) First attested as Zandbank in 1810. Compound of zand (“sand”) and kant (“side, edge”). The second element was originally bank (“bank, ridge”), before shifting to hoek (“isolated place”) and finally settling on kant.
