From a³¹- +‎ pʰau³⁵, in which the root is from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pəw (price) (whence the verb pʰau³⁵ (expensive)), with a nominaliser a³¹- added. Cognate with Burmese အဖိုး (a.hpui:, price), Old Chinese (*puːʔ, treasure), Nuosu (pu, price), Tangut 𗗦 (*phə¹, price), Tshobdun tə́-pʰu, Drung aŋ³¹ pɯ⁵³ (price) and Jingpho hpu (price, expensive).
