From Old Swedish aghborre, aborre, from a combination of Proto-Germanic *agjō (whence also egg) and Proto-Germanic *burzô (whence Swedish borre), which is related to Swedish borste and English burr. Cognate with Danish aborre, Norwegian Bokmål abbor, Norwegian Nynorsk åbor, Faroese áburra, Icelandic aborri and English barse.
