Uncertain, probably from Greek μάλαμα (málama, “gold”), compare Aromanian malamã (“gold”), Megleno-Romanian amálomă (“gold”), Albanian malamë (“gold”). Possibly influenced by aur (“gold”) and aramă (“copper”). Compare also Italian lama (“metal plate”), Serbo-Croatian lama, lim.
