Etymology

Borrowed from Spanish, said to be from Spanish alejillos, plural of *alejillo. Also possibly a corruption of Spanish alejijas (expected *alehihas if borrowed), plural of alejija (barley porridge spiced with sesame), from Andalusian Arabic الدشيشة (ad-dašíša), from Arabic الجَشِيشَة (al-jašīša, wheat coarsely ground, and put into a cooking-pot, into which some flesh-meat is thrown, or some dates, and then cooked).
