From Middle Welsh amrwt, from Proto-Celtic *an- (“un-”) + *brutus (“boiling heat”) (compare Old Irish bruth), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewh₁-. By surface analysis, an- (“un-”) +‎ brwd (“boiled, heated”).
