ari izan

Basque

Etymology

From ari (activity) +‎ izan (transitive and intransitive auxiliary).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): (most dialects) /aɾi is̻an/ [a.ɾi i.s̻ãn]
  • IPA(key): (Biscayan) /aɾi is̺an/ [a.ɾi i.s̺ãn]

  • Hyphenation: a‧ri i‧zan

Verb

ari izan da/zaio (imperfect participle ari izaten, future participle ari izango or ari izanen, short form ari izan, verbal noun ari izate)

  1. (auxiliary) Used to mark the progressive aspect.

Usage notes

This auxiliary verb is used together with the imperfect participle to mark the progressive aspect. For example, itzultzen naiz (I return) compared to itzultzen ari naiz (I am returning). It always takes intransitive auxiliaries, even with transitive verbs, so idazten dut (I write) versus idazten ari naiz (I am writing).
