Borrowed from New Latin asymptōta (līnea) (literally “line not meeting”), from Ancient Greek ἀσύμπτωτος (asúmptōtos, “not falling together”), from ἀ- (a-, “not”) + σύν (sún, “together”) + πτωτός (ptōtós, “apt to fall, fallen”), from πίπτω (píptō, “to fall”).
