böka
Swedish
Verb
böka (present bökar, preterite bökade, supine bökat, imperative böka)
- to root (of swine, or of messy digging, overturning, searching, etc., more generally)
- Grisarna bökade i jorden
- The pigs were rooting in the dirt
- En gris hade bökat upp hela landet
- A pig had torn up the entire garden plot
- Han bökade runt efter skiftnyckeln i lådan
- He rooted around in the box for his adjustable wrench
Usage notes
- Idiomatically what pigs do, rather than rota, which sounds like messy searching more generically.
- Often with a particle like runt (“around”), omkring (“around”), or upp (“up”) (for tearing up ground through rooting).
