Etymology

Apparently from Latvian bārs (orphaned, weak, vulnerable). Suhonen lists a form bōriņ as a borrowing from Latvian bāriņš[1] a variant of bārenis used in some compounds, e.g., bāriņtiesa (custody court, family court). This entry is for the form listed in LĒL.
