Etymology
Apparently from Latvian bārs (“orphaned, weak, vulnerable”). Suhonen lists a form bōriņ as a borrowing from Latvian bāriņš[1] a variant of bārenis used in some compounds, e.g., bāriņtiesa (“custody court, family court”). This entry is for the form listed in LĒL.
