Etymology 2
16th century, equivalent to bak (“chin, cheek”) + huis (“house, encasing”).
It is debated to what degree this formation originated as a pun on etymology 1 above. Compare Ripuarian Backes (“bakery” and “well-fed, chubby-faced child”). The earliest Dutch attestations have no such connotation, but this does not rule out the pun as such.
Noun
bakhuis n (plural bakhuizen, diminutive bakhuisje n)
- (dated) alternative spelling of bakkes
