  • Hyphenation: bak‧huis

Etymology 1

From Middle Dutch bakhuus (13th century). By surface analysis, bakken (to bake) +‎ huis (house).

  1. bakery
  2. separate building with an oven for baking bread and such, belonging to a house or farm; private bakery

Etymology 2

16th century, equivalent to bak (chin, cheek) +‎ huis (house, encasing).

It is debated to what degree this formation originated as a pun on etymology 1 above. Compare Ripuarian Backes (bakery” and “well-fed, chubby-faced child). The earliest Dutch attestations have no such connotation, but this does not rule out the pun as such.

Noun

bakhuis n (plural bakhuizen, diminutive bakhuisje n)

  1. (dated) alternative spelling of bakkes
