Etymology

Currently held for a Balkan substratum word;[1] compare Albanian bajgë, probably borrowed from Proto-Albanian *balgā, Serbo-Croatian bȁlega/ба̏лега. Compare Aromanian baligã. Also compare Lombard bagula, belegot, Provençal velego, veleguo and Occitan belego.

However, in other borrowings from Albanian the intervowel "l" is rhotacized (as in Albanian modhull to mazăre). This might indicate it is an older double "l" (as in callis to cale) or a more recent borrowing from Slavic languages.[2]
