Etymology

Borrowed from English barbecue, borrowed from Spanish barbacoa, from Taíno barbakoa (framework of sticks), the raised wooden structure the natives used to either sleep on or cure meat. Originally “meal of roasted meat or fish”. Compare Tagalog barbikyu. Doublet of balbakuwa.
