From Middle Welsh bedyð, from Proto-Brythonic *bėdɨð, from Vulgar Latin *batidium (baptism), nominal formation from Late Latin baptidiō (to baptize). Cognate with Middle Cornish begeth, beseth and Middle Breton badez.
