Etymology

First attested in 1608 spelled beeckpunge, representing a calque of German Bachbunge / Bachpunge, where beek (brook) replaces German Bach; so named because the plant grows by brooks and ditches. The element -punge is an unadapted borrowing from German and does not exist outside this word in Dutch; it ultimately derives from a Germanic word meaning "bulge" or "bunch". Compare also Swedish bäckebunga, whence the taxonomic name beccabunga (so named by Linnaeus).
