Etymology

From Old Swedish besitia, from Middle Low German besitten, from Proto-Germanic *bisitjaną, from *bi- + *sitjaną. Equivalent to be- +‎ sitta. Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål besitte, Danish besidde, Dutch bezitten, German besitzen, English besit and Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐍃𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (bisitan).[1]
