bicron

English

Noun

bicron (plural bicrons)

  1. A billionth (short scale) of a metre, represented by μμ; a nanometre.
  2. A billionth (long scale) or a trillionth (short scale) of a metre, represented by μμ; a picometre.

Usage notes

Sense 1 is the original definition of the bicron as given in Houston and Kennelly, On Certain New Prefixes Proposed for Physical Unit Magnitudes (1894).[1] Sense 2, also attested, possibly arose from a misinterpretation based on the symbol for the bicron, μμ, or differences between the long scale and the short scale.[2]
