Inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *wahiR. Phonetic development: *wəir (from early *wəhiR with irregular vowel change) added with intrusive (> *wəyər), then dissimilated into *wəyor and later monophthongised into *wior. Cognate with Malay air, Lampung Api way, Sundanese cai, etc.
