Etymology
Ultimately from Sanskrit व्यय (vyaya, “spending”).[1] A borrowing from Malay biaya (“expense; charge”) is also considered, given trade between the Hindu Srivijaya Empire and the pre-colonial Philippines. Compare Javanese ꦧꦶꦪꦪ (biyaya).
