Etymology

bokstav +‎ -s- +‎ vänster. Attested since 1973.

The term seems to allude both to the fact that various splinter groups at the time added an increasing number of alphabetical letters to distinguish themselves (such as KFML(r)), and to the groups following communist doctrine to the letter (bokstavstrogen).
