Ultimately derived from Proto-Afroasiatic *baḳar- (“wealthy”).[1] Cognates include Tamahaq beɣer (“fortunate, lucky”), Tawellemmet baɣar (“be rich”), Central Atlas Tamazight anesbaɣur (“rich, fortunate”), and possibly Meroitic 𐦧𐦳𐦫 (pqr, “prince”).
