Learned borrowing from Old Turkic 𐰉𐰆𐰑𐰣 (b¹ud¹n¹ /⁠bodun⁠/), plural of 𐰉𐰆𐰑 (b¹ud¹ /⁠bod⁠/). The first vowel was misread as /u/ during the borrowing process.
