Etymology

An onomatopoeia, related to cicëroj and cirlë, with many variations. Initially from a *cër, a lexicalization of cër-cër, which gave many variants via suffixes and phonetic shifts.[1] In view of variant cërllë (with -rn- assimilation), Orel suggests a South Slavic origin; compare Serbo-Croatian crnilo (“blackness; ink”), Macedonian црнило (crnilo, “blackness”),[2] which is not sustainable as it could not have given so many variants in all dialects, and it is considered outside of the borrowing practice that a general nominative element of "blackness" from a language can give in another language so many names for various birds, although some dialectal forms may have been influenced by it. Also, the black dots which are characteristic for some of the species may be related to cirkë (“droplet, globule”). The variant cërllë or cërlle is actually cërle, wrongly listed with a velar l initially by Hahn, later by Meyer and others from him.[3]
