Vietnamese

Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *kəc ~ *kɨc (faeces), from Proto-Austroasiatic *ʔicʔ (excrement; faeces). Cognate with Muong Bi kếch (rusty), Arem kʉc, Khmer អាចម៍ (ʼac).

This is one of three known cases of velar initial in Vietnamese corresponding to zero-initial in other Austroasiatic branches. The other two cases are củi (firewood) and the dialectal cảy (swollen).
