- (anatomy, physiology) synovial fluid: A transparent, viscous, non-Newtonian lubricating fluid which is found in the cavities of synovial joints or bursae and secreted by the synovial membrane; its main purpose is to reduce friction between the articular cartilage of synovial joints during movement
