Etymology
Probably ultimately derived from Proto-Celtic *kantos (“corner, rim (of a chariot wheel)”) via Medieval Latin cant(h)ellus, diminutive of canthus (“rim of a chariot wheel”). Compare Provençal cantel (“part, corner”), Catalan chantel (“part, corner, quarter”).
