Probably ultimately derived from Proto-Celtic *kantos (corner, rim (of a chariot wheel)) via Medieval Latin cant(h)ellus, diminutive of canthus (rim of a chariot wheel). Compare Provençal cantel (part, corner), Catalan chantel (part, corner, quarter).
