caqis

Albanian

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /t͡saˈc͡ɕis/
  • Rhymes: -is

A form of cakis (to chop wood).[1]

Etymology 2

From pocaqis (to filthy, to wrack).[1]

caqís (aorist caqisa, participle caqisur)

  1. to wrack, to torment, to exhaust

Etymology 3

Disputed. Drizari, Lambertz, and Leotti list it with a different meaning from the others above. Originally meaning "to spit between teeth", which Lamberts brings with the abstract meaning "to score". Probably related to caq (goal;place), as Lambertz also uses caq as goal, though without sourcing it.[1] Meanwhile, Mann relates it to the second meaning (close to pocaqis).[2]

  1. to spit, to pass saliva through teeth
    Synonym: pështyj
  2. (figurative) to score
    Synonym: shënoj
