celălalt
Romanian
Etymology
From cel, itself an aphaeretic form of acel + alt, itself from Vulgar Latin *altru, a variant of alter, with an epenthetic -l- in all forms either for ease of pronunciation due to two adjacent vowels, cf. tale, mele, or due to the fact that it may descend from a Latin composition *eccum illum illum alter, the illum being the -l- in that case, though it's not entirely clear. The -ă- in the masculine singular may also be for ease of pronunciation, in order to break up forbidden consonant clusters, cf. the colloquial forms ălălalt and ăstălalt.
