chessboard (plural chessboards)

1. (chess) The square board used in the game of chess, subdivided into eight rows of eight squares each, the squares in each row and column being of alternating colours.
   • 2022, “2023 Laws of Chess”, in FIDE‎^[1], page 4:

     If a piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent’s piece the latter is captured and removed from the chessboard as part of the same move.
