  1. (chess) The square board used in the game of chess, subdivided into eight rows of eight squares each, the squares in each row and column being of alternating colours.
    • 2022, “2023 Laws of Chess”, in FIDE[1], page 4:
      If a piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent’s piece the latter is captured and removed from the chessboard as part of the same move.
