Usage notes

The pronunciation /ˌsajbeʁ/, influenced by English cyber- /ˈsaɪbɚ/, is common in Brazil. It was the most popular choice in an Instagram poll about the pronunciation of cibercultura and is the only attested pronunciation for cibercrime, ciberespaço, and ciberguerra on YouGlish. Brazilian dictionaries do not provide a specific pronunciation for ciber-, nor does the Vocabulário Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa, implying they prescribe /ˌsibeʁ/, based on the spelling. However, /ˌsajbeʁ/ is not attested for cibernauta, where the prefix is bound to the suffix -nauta rather than to an independent word.
