  1. (historical) A person employed by the monarch to announce the hour by crowing like a cock.
    • 1867, Cyrus Redding, Sir Thomas Wyse, page 182:
      The cockcrower heralded or accompanied the laureate, crowing like a cock in the royal presence. The Hanoverian king thought it was mocking his dignity.
