déif
Luxembourgish
Etymology
From Old High German *diuf, northern variant of tiuf, from Proto-Germanic *deupaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewb-. The expected masculine form is *déifen, but the fricative was voiced, possibly by analogy with the homophone Déif (“thief”) and/or the rhyming adjectives dréif (“turbid”), léif (“dear”).
