Etymology

From Middle Low German dörnitze, from Polabian dvarnai̯ćă (chamber), probably derived from Proto-Slavic *dvьrь (door) or *dvorъ (court). Cognate with modern Low German Dörnse, Dönse. The word is also attested in eastern dialects of Middle High German as dürnitz, türnitz, possibly from a Sorbian cognate (or otherwise from the Low German).
