distelvink
Dutch
Etymology
From Middle Dutch distelvinc. By surface analysis, distel (“thistle”) + vink (“finch”). Goldfinches commonly eat thistle seeds and use thistle down as nest material, and are as such commonly named after this plant; compare English thistlefinch, German Distelfink, Latin carduelis.
