From the root of Proto-Balto-Slavic *genˀtei, according to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (“to strike, kill”), see also Proto-Slavic *gъnati (“to hunt, pursue”). Cognate with Lithuanian genys.
