  1. (physics) Potential energy (not force) divided by electric charge; measured in volts

Usage notes

Despite the name, electromotive force is related to potential energy rather than force. To avoid confusion, ISO and IEC standards recommend using the terms source voltage or source tension instead.[1][2]
