Borrowed from French entrecôte, compound of entre (“between”) + côte (“rib”). The first part is from Middle French entre, from Old French entre, from Latin inter (“between; among”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁enter (“between”). The second part is from Middle French coste, from Old French coste, from Latin costa, from Proto-Indo-European *kost-. Compare Danish entrecote, German Entrecote, Norwegian Bokmål entrecôte, Swedish entrecôte.
