Probably a back-formation from eudicots, short for eudicotyledons, from the New Latin coinage eudicotylēdōn, from the Ancient Greek components εὐ- (eu-, “good, well”) +‎ δι- (di-, “two”) +‎ κοτυληδών (kotulēdṓn, “cup-shaped cavity”); equivalent to eu- (“true”) +‎ dicot.
